AAUW Huntsville and The University of Alabama in Huntsville have long been partners with the Huntsville community in delivering and supporting STEM education. Both the Huntsville Branch and UAH have supported the North Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair (NARSEF) and the Alabama Science and Engineering Fair (ASEF) which includes participants from over 30 local and regional elementary, middle and high schools. UAH has been critically important to the delivery of STEM education in Huntsville and the North Alabama region hosting a multitude of events and camps including a one-day Adventures in Engineering experience; Latino Robotics Summer Camp for 6-8th grade students; Engineering 360 Summer Camp for high schoolers; and our half-day, Girls’ Science and Engineering program for girls in third through fifth grade.
At UAH, we are keenly aware of the importance of STEM education and STEM role models for young students, especially female students. While there are many good existing programs that provide hands-on activities to female students, there are only a few programs that are truly dedicated to reaching female students and addressing their educational needs. Further, there is no program that provides the total immersion experience that a Tech Trek camp can offer to Huntsville area girls. UAH and the local community are invested in supporting STEM activities and female professionals are certainly ready to support a Tech Trek program in Huntsville.
Huntsville is a high-tech city that is co-located with some of the biggest names in the science and engineering fields including NASA, U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Research Development and Engineering Center, Boeing, Adtran, Dynetics, and Lockheed Martin. Huntsville employs over 40,000 science and engineering professionals.
Tech Trek will take place on the campus of The University of Alabama in Huntsville from June 10-16, 2018.
